Our daughter is just about 9 months old and eating solids (jarred baby food) and rice cereal everyday. With the cooler months coming on, I was wondering when it will be ok for her to have regular oatmeal (old fashioned, not instant).

Many thanks!

If she is eating rice cereal and regular baby-food well, she should do nicely with regular oatmeal.
You can make it as thick or thin as she likes it, as long as you are using the old-fashioned oats and not the instant, which is full of other ingredients you may not wish to put into your child's system.
If you'd like to start her on it now without heating up your kitchen with the cooking of the regular, whatever company makes the rice cereal she eats should also make a baby 's oatmeal cereal. You make it the same way as the rice cereal.
I used to get Gerber for my kids, if your brand does, by chance not have it.
If you grocer does not carry it, ask them. They'll usually be very happy to accommodate you.

I don't like oatmeal AT ALL so I couldn't eat it with or without sugar! Maybe you can try a bit of jam in the oatmeal or give the toast since that is obviously an option. I have no idea what the parents reasons are for not allowing *any* sugar. People have weird ideas about things and I don't think there is a way you are going to change their mind. So make the best of it while she's there. it's not something you have to deal with everyday.

If she's been eating baby oatmeal for a couple of months with no problems, then her belly is ready for regular oatmeal.

It depends on if your daughter eats pureed baby food or chunky? Regular oatmeal has larger pieces than baby oatmeal (basically the only difference) and should only be eaten by a baby that can mash and chew.

She should be able to eat it now. If the pieces are too big, you can actually put the oatmeal in a blender when it's dry for two minutes to make it more digestible.

I think it depends on how you make it. I personally dont like oatmeal made with water so I did not start my daughter on the old fashioned oats till she was a year so I could make it with milk. But if you like yours made with water I see no reason why not. Cream of wheat is another good option since it is smoother.

My son was eating it by that age.
She may not like the larger solids but you can also grind up the oatmeal in a processor before cooking.
