I suppose its arrogant to think Spanish speakers are talking about them. I go to parties with bi-linguals and when they are conversing in Spanish (mine isn't too good) they always translate for me so I can get the joke too. I find that very classy. Incidentally, Mexico is a highly civilized country, much older than the US, lots of European influence in architecture, religion and customs. I think some of the folks who object to Spanish speakers should grow up.

You can learn something every day. I never knew that I got mad from hearing someone speak Spanish. My next door neighbor and his wife always talk Chinese. It doesn't bother me at all. The guy across the street talks Slavish with his wife. We're all the best of friends even though their accents are sometime a problem.
But now I learn that I get mad when I hear Spanish. Pedro, next time remember to put the word SOME after do.

I do speak Spanish as well as English and Cajun French.Where are you asking about,in the work place,,at home ,where....In this country most people speak English and have for many many years.its the language our constitution and our laws are written in.I personally don't care what you speak, but our laws say that anyone that becomes a legal citizen of the USA has to be able to read and speak enough English to be able to pass the exam's etc of becoming a legal citizen.that being said I personally don't care what any one says to anyone else.
I could care less whether any ones talking about me or not in any language.

There is a saying I like:
What do you call someone who speaks 3 or more languages? A polyglot.
What do you call someone who speaks two languages? Bilingual.
What do you call someone who barely can speak one language?
American!
I don't like hearing Spanish being spoken by people who come to this country and don't want to assimilate. But I like even less the fact that our own native-born people can barely speak or write English, when most Europeans routinely speak 4 or 5 languages.
We need to do much better for ourselves linguistically before we can gripe about others.

I guess I speak enough Spanish to get me into trouble.
I frequently hear someone around me speak Spanish. They seem quite happy for their mutual exchanges to be in Spanish. When I address them in Spanish and ask or direct them, they act insulted and a bit peeved that I speak to them in Spanish. I've actually had some tell me to not to speak Spanish to them. What's goin on here?
Frankly, I think it is rude to speak a non native tongue in a mixed public group or gathering and many other Americans apparently feel the same way. I can't say with certainty but my sense of it is that Hispanics (most Mexicans) haven't got a clue how to conduct themselves properly in a civilized country. It's not that they are bad people, they are simply ignorant and that leads to rudeness and in extreme cases to being/doing illegal activites.
We don't need that in our country.
Legal immigration educates, civilizes and enculturates in all these areas of offense including language and swearing allegiance. Until illegality is stopped and legality restored we will have chaos in American.
Illegals go home and come back to the USA legally if you choose to do so. Learn to speak English and conduct yourself properly in public. What you do in private is your own business.

It is rude to be in America and speak Spanish in public, especially when you are trying to do business. America has a language, it is called English if you refuse to use English in public, then you need to rethink rather you want to be a American or not.
If you want to be a American then you need to stop alienating your self from the general public. You appear to be yet another Mexican loyalist, so you may want to pack up and leave. Perhaps you will feel more at home in Mexico, cause every one speaks Spanish there.

Everything is attitude. I have been where people were speaking Spanish and one of them ask me if that upset me. I said no that I figured if they wanted me to know what they were saying they would speak English. I speak two languages. I am bi-lingual. It was amusing to me when someone with her hands on her hips said to me that I should be bi-lingual, that bi-lingual is good. I guess she didn't know that there are other languages besides Spanish. If someone is rude they can be so in any language. If someone is respectful they can be so in any language. Learn to smile more and stop worrying about changing things that you can't.

Who DO you hang around with anyway? If the people around you are so unimportant to you, then how do you know they are mad at you speaking Spanish? Because you ARE talking about THEM? You can speak whatever language you want, even Pig Latin, but in our civilized country of USA, it is considered RUDE to speak another language OUT LOUD in the presence of listeners that are so near you that you could determine it pisses them off! Why are Mexican women so often angry and uneducated? THAT is another question for this site!

Very true so using your logic we shouldn't have English and Spanish on products and signs we should expect the Spanish speakers to learn English. Hey I'm the one making the product and if I don't want the packaging to be in Spanish I shouldn't be forced to add it by the government.

but if your sitting at a table with some one who can't speak it or understand, and you speak in Spanish then that's just being rude, and down right ignorant.
