Main reasons were
1. Belgian resistance to German invasion stronger than Germans anticipated
2. British Expeditionary Force ready and on mainland Europe sooner than Germans anticipated
3. After Germans had got over 1 and 2 they moved too speedily for their supply people to cope and had to slow down ... a disaster because they were relying on speed
4. Russia invaded part of Germany successfully in August 1914 and Germany had to take troops from the Western Front to rpulse the Russians.
5. Both sides in France/Belgium then began to entrench themselves creating defensive war rather than aggressive war. War became one of attrition or wearing down from then onwards.

On this mortal coil of ours, due to humans, there is a couple
of Wars going on at any one time, Christmas or not. However
I presume you mean WW1 and WW2, these wars were
always going to be a couple of years at least !! the Government
quite encouraged the hope that 'it'll be all over by Christmas'
shows you how gullible we all are .....
