it is not that hard to do yourself.it is hard to mess up a textured wall surface as it has no pattern and is random.get a booklet from the rental store or go online to get some help with technique.be sure that it is what you want.removel of the textyred wall is not easy.other things can be done to add depth and texture to your walls, such as sponging, ragging and wash are just a few,and if you dont like it in a month you just prime and try something else.with a textured wall if you change your mind there is a lot of scraping to do.good luck

though messy, splatter and knock down textures are easy to do, make sure you mix enough joint compound for the whole project, and make sure it is all the same consistency. and for you other nut cases, ya smooth walls are making a come back, but it is a hundred time harder to achieve a smooth finish than a textured finish, even a seasoned drywall contractor has a harder time with a smooth finish, that is why it will actually cost you more for a smooth finish than a textured one, texture will hide many small imperfections in the wall. If you do smooth walls and paint in satin or semi gloss, you will see every little imperfection in the wall. As far as splatter texture, practice on a piece of cardboard or start in a closet, keep the gun about 18 to 20 inches from the wall and over lap your spray patter by 50% on every pass. if you are going to knock it down, let it set for a few minutes, and test spot first keep an even light pressure on the trowel, if you mess up scape it of while it is wet, or it will wash off with water after it is dry

Try on a scrap piece of board, if you like the way it looks, great. If not, well at least you'll know that you need to hire someone to do it. Splatter isn't hard to do because you can see if your pattern is some what uniform while your applying it. Knock down is a little more difficult to do. Knock down you have to watch how much pressure you are applying as your knocking down. You can allow the texture to dry completly, then lightly sand the tops off the splatter. Anything other than flat painted walls, the texture will dry unevenly, making knocking down very difficult, unless its completly dry all over, then just use the sanding method.

Sigh,,,No real offense meant but "Don't"
Texturing is so dated, and tedious, and sooooooooooooo difficult to change as your mood might change,,,especially on walls. I realize that TRENDS change too in decorating, but I apply thousands of gallons of paint in a year, and grumble when I have to do it over texture.
They attract dust, and it shows. They are impssoible to clean properly, and if they chip a patch might show up as if it was a RED spot on a white napkin.
I also do not install texturing any longer,,, as I don't want my name on a job that might eventually become a grumbling situation for a client.

Do not do it yourself, plastering is a really hard thing to do. Once it dries it is terrible trying to get it off. Anyhow textured walls are out, smooth is the new in, ok.

BELIEVE ME.. You will screw it up. I HIGHLY advise letting a professional do it... by the way.... do not know what you mean by splatter... or knock-off.... I have a number of textures.. brocade.. orange peel, trowel cut but have never heard of the ones you mentioned.
