I'm talking about on the municipal level - please, no answers about Bush and Cheney et al., getting DWIs. I'm not interested in a Republican vs Democrat debate.

The defendant goes to AA regularly, and did an outpatient therapy program for 11 weeks immediately following his arrest.

It shouldn't really matter, as judges are SUPPOSED to follow the law and not their personal opinions. But, my father's experiences that he shares with me (as a lawyer) and the way I see cases that are reported in the media handled I would say that it all depends on the law. Democratic-appointed judges tend to be judicial activists more, but also have more of a belief in giving people second chances. Republican-appointed judges are more likely to be by the book. If the laws for drunk driving are relatively lenient, the Democratic judge might be "worse" for you. There is, afterall, a huuuuuge social stigma nowadays against driving with the slightest bit of alcohol in your system. If the laws are harsh, the Republican will probably let the person off relatively easy if it's the first time but will probably be more of a "hardass" than a Democrat might be.

It's good that the defendant went into treatment, that is usually how they deal with first timers. They might also suspend his/her license.

I'd say a Rebublican would be tougher. We've had democratic and republican judges in my area and the republicans usually are the toughest.

REPUBLICAN, by far, the democrat judge will let him get off easier, he would cite his emotional past as an excuse to give him a light sentence, just like they do to convicted rapists, Liberal judges let anything go....

The attorney should know which judge to get. If he doesn't, get another attorney. Get an attorney that is buddy buddy with the judge. It may help.
