on a few pieces that came off, I got down to a part of the wall that feels like soft felt. I am afraid that I have messed things up. What do I do?

Give yourself a break and just go to a rental place and rent a wall paper steamer machine. Even Home Depoe has rental tools. Not sure if have that one but you can rent them. These tools work somewhat like a steam iron and are so easy to use. They steam the paper so that it can be pulled off the wall. You may have many layers and it will help remove them all. Don't score your wall all up and have to repair it before rewallpapering or painting it which ever you plan to do. Take it easy on yourself and get the right tool for the job. You will be so happier once y ou try it this way and will thank me big time.

Greetings!
Removing wallpaper withe the scoring tool allows the water to get behind the paper and loosen the glue. However it may if you have drywall puncture that paper also allowing the liquid used to soften the paper to also soften the gypsum. This will hold true with plaster also.

You should remove paper simply by continuing to spray coat with warm water and a splash of vinegar. This will after gentle surface saturation loosen the glue enough so as the weight of the wet paper will make it fall off the wall

Wallah no scraping. Your case is an easy fix. let the soft spot dry and if it does not re-harden, skim the wall with red-mixed drywall compound and then prime it.

Good luck

i have used the fabric softener with warm water, and it works great, smells great. i score the paper, saturate an area, let it set for about 15 minutes, go back, spray again, then start peeling, not much need to even scrape. i know vineagar works too, but i think that the fabric softener is less caustic. as for your drywall, as suggested, sounds like you need to let it dry and see how it looks. as previously suggested, you may need to resurface it and definetly prime it.
good luck

Just do a small section at a time. Give the first section time to dry to make sure your drywall isn't damaged. Then continue with the rest, doing small sections at a time. Hope this helps!
