a pedometer works with the movement of the hips when its hung on your pants..tracksuit.etc..etc..
its accurate to a 80/100 steps. As i advised my client that was using her pedometer whilst i was training her to monitor her step count. It was accurate with regular movement like walking and running, but when we stop to stretch any slight hip movement will alter the count,. so i find that a pedometer is really misleading,
do constantly check on the pedometer if you want to know how many steps a day you take. if the reading is out, i suggest you throw it away!
(havent seen a pedometer that has settings)

Pedometers are better to measure steps. They are not reliable for distance because even after you have calibrated them, you will have variations in your stride. I agree with the gentleman who recommended the GPS for a more accurate measurement of distance.

most of them have settings that you can adjust and this makes them fairly accurate.
