This site has scientific info on how marinades work

Here is a good marinade recipe

Chicken Marinade

1 1/2 cups dry red wine; Zinfandel
3/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons soy or tamari sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
pepper

In a large screw top jar, combine wine, oil, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and pepper to taste. Cover and shake until blended.

marinate means to coat or immerse food in a flavoring.
So whatever flavoring it is you like, just soak your chicken in it before you cook it.
soak for at least 15 min before cooking
trial and error will tell you what flavoring you like best on the chicken.

Coat it the same way. Only take a basting/pastry brush or I use a clean paint brush and coat the chicken that way.
