Long time ago I read a book by Dr. Scott Peck, "Roadless Traveled." and he started the book by saying, "Life is difficult/hard."
Is life meant to be hard and painful?

Life is difficult. This is to help us grow and learn. However, it doesn't have to be difficult and without meaning. Finding meaning in life makes it easier to handle. As we come to understand our divine purpose in life, challenges are opportunities to meet our potential and show ourselves and our maker what we are capable of.

I believe life is not meant to originally be difficult/hard, but, because of the many different people in the world, everyone of us makes it difficult/hard for each other. It is only how we respond/react to those people that makes it really easy for all of us. I am in a very emotional abusive situation, and all I get is BS and I well find myself taking it personally, this is what makes the situation difficult/hard for me to live with.

Life is not difficult.
What makes it look difficult is our resistance to its natural flow.
In fact, it's not the events (even the worst ones) what make us suffer
only resistance to life causes it
we must accept life as it comes to find peace

"Pain is physical; suffering is mental. Beyond the mind there is no suffering. Pain is merely a signal that the body is in danger and requires attention. Similarly, suffering warns us that the structure of memories and habits, which we call the person (vyakti), is threatened by loss or change. Pain is essential for the survival of the body, but none compels you to suffer. Suffering is due entirely to clinging or resisting; it is a sign of our unwillingness to move on, to flow with life."

Life is hard. I don't know if it's meant to be that way. I guess it must be! I read something interesting lately. I think it was either attributed to Pope John Paul II or Pope Benedict XVI. (No, not the Islam quote. :) How lame of me.) Anyway, it was about the martyrs and how so many of them went to their death joyfully singing praise to God. I must confess that my initial thought was that they must be nuts! Then I began to realize that we should all live that way because life IS hard; being miserable won't change that, so why not find all the joy one can?

Life is full of tests.....

What are these tests for and can they benefit us?
So lets use an analogy to understand what tests really do. In school we have to take tests to show our strength or weakness in each subject... based on the result we pass or fail. So a test is designed to bring out our potential... to show us areas that we excel in as well as areas that we need to work on.

Life's tests are pretty much in every area of life.. be it health, wealth, family or whatever. Life's tests bring out our strength or weakness for us in the same way that school tests did. Dealing with tests is a matter of creating a mind-set that is focused on overcoming the difficulties instead of letting them overwhelm us. If we look at the difficulties that we face in our life and think of them as opportunities to build our strengths our attitude toward them will change. We will feel stronger instead of weak and helpless. When we feel helpless we are less tolerant and more impatient.

I think the point of life (not the meaning, just the point) is to be a journey. It has to be hard, so that you learn how to overcome and find new ways to make life easier, for you and others. That way we can all find a little bit of enlightenment by the time we die. Just remember to enjoy the rare moments of happiness life gives you and to take the moments of happiness you can.

I can't speak for anyone else, but my life has been very similar to a road trip. Some days good, some days bad, but whatever the current condition, it will soon change.

Meant to be? Must be since that's the way it is.

I don't think it's meant to be that way, but I think that it most often is. I think this is a result of people being mean to each other. If everyone would just live and let live, the world would be a happier place.
