My grandparents were French & Greek, I guess I look a little Mediterrean? (straight hair, normal nose, no stereotypes).
anyway this Jewish guy in my class at college talked to me in the library & first thing he said was "how was your Rosh Hashana (sorry spelling)"? I don't know this guy AT ALL, so why does he think I'm Jewish?

My last name may be ambiguous, it's certainly not obviously Jewish.

Isn't that a little rude. I don't like to be judged on my looks, how does he know I'm not an atheist or a Buddhist or whatever?

It would have only been rude if he had known you weren't Jewish. Give the guy a break.

I wouldn't say "rude". "Useless", maybe, as you obviously don't celebrate it.

I wouldn't be offended if anyone had said to me "merry Christmas!" and asked me how I spent my holiday (even though I do not celebrate it). You may say it's different, as Christmas is not a very religious holiday, and most of its symbols are seasonal, but so is Rosh Hashanah (you weren't so wrong with the spelling (-:).

All in all- the guy just wanted to start a conversation with you. Maybe you should have said "There wasn't Rosh Hashanah. I'm not Jewish", but I don't think you should be offended.

He made a small mistake. He's just trying to be nice and make conversation. Just be polite and tell him you don't celebrate Rosh Hashanah, because you're not Jewish.

Poor guy was probably sitting there for a few minutes (or longer) trying to think of at least something to say to you. Forgive him if the first thing out of his mouth isn't Shakespearean poetry.

He is probably a very nice guy trying to get introduced to a nice looking girl he feels attracted to.
He is not rude, after all we say merry xmas to Christians thaugh we are Muslims.
In such a situation, I would thank him and inform him politly that you are of a different faith and wish him and all humanity all the good in the world.
Making friends is allways good.
good luck.

It is absolutely no more rude than random people wishing strangers a happy Christmas. He's just trying to make polite conversation with you.

Get over yourself, sister. Here's a guy just trying to make conversation with you. Just smile and say, I don't celebrate that holiday. And don't make him feel bad, guys have such fragile egos and they're usually afraid of us.

Yes it is rude. People always assume that since I'm in American that I celebrate Christmas and the other pagan holidays. I hate it and they look at me like I'm an alien when I tell them that I don't celebrate pagan holidays.

Wow, racism is alive and well, he was trying to make conversation. Do him a favor and stay away from him.
