I want to apply for an internship to the state department for internships in american embassies in other countries. Anyone who has ever applied or done one? How competitive is it really? What are the chances of actually getting an internship?

PS. I've studied the state department website inside out.. I'm just looking for someones personal experience in trying to get an internship or actually doing one. Thanks :)

I have been supervisor of interns abroad.

My impression is that the problem is the delay in security clearance often takes the student or graduate out of a viable timeframe.

That said, the lottery is worth entering. Internships are the upper middle class's ticket to success. Pity that those who can't afford to work for free are excluded.
