I wonder why no-one thought of the obvious true answer. It must be Russian, because Russia is considered a European country rather than an Asian one. The population of Russia exceeds 144 million.

It is, by very far, German with over 90 Million native speakers shared between Germany, Austria, Switzerland, linchtenstein and also parts of France, Poland, the Czech republic, Croatia, etc.
France, in comparison, is at a paltry 60656178, followed by Great Britain, with 60441457.
Although English is often perceived as an international language in English speaking circles, Europeans tend to be more pragmatic and generally learn languages of neighbouring countries. I have always been surprised to meet French and German youths who conversed fluently in Spanish, Italian, etc and were at a pain to utter anything in English past common greetings, so my advice is: take your word book!
I hope this helps,
f.j.

Indo-European languages (see The Indo-European Family of Languages , table) predominate in Europe; others spoken include Basque, Maltese, and the languages classified as Finno-Ugric, Samoyedic, Bulgaric, and Turkic.
