Owning and caring for a dog is a big responsibility. It takes time, money, love, and commitment. If there isn't anyone home during the day to help care for your dog, it's best to find someone who can help out. You don't want to leave the dog outside all day when you're gone - especially when it's cold. My Mom stops by and leaves my dog out while I'm at work. She also dognaps her once in a while and takes her to her house for the day. Don't get a dog until you have someone who is willing to help out when you're not home. Make sure you have some time to help the dog adjust to your home too. You don't want to get a dog and let it alone right away. Get it over a holiday or summer break, when you have lots of time to devote to it's new adjustment. Good luck.

Crate train it. When you are gone, it needs to know that it has to stay in a confined area. If not a crate, block off the kitchen with a baby gate, so that if it pees, you can clean it up easily.
