I don't really have any opinions on if it should or shouldn't...although I would assume the public concensus would be against spanking...however, I can answer the question "was it in your school." I went to a Christian school, and spanking was part of the discipline. My opinions as to if it was effective...it seemed to be the same kids getting spanked every day. 90% of the class would be well-behaved, and then you'd have a handful that wouldn't behave no matter what you threatened them with. I don't think getting spanked every day bothered them in the least. They were immune to it, it seems. If the goal was to "break" their rebellious spirit or nature, I'd have to say it failed.

It was allowed in my school. I feel it was also abused. Examples, I borrowed a pencil from the teacher, so I was paddled after class. One time the principal thought there was too much noise in the study hall class, he didn't know who the individuals were who were making the noise, so he just paddled the entire class. I remember an occassion when my father and a few other fathers paid the principal a visit because when he paddled my brother and his friends for returning late to class from lunch, he left bruises and welts. The principal was well over 6 feet tall and looked like a football player, he used a 3 foot boat oar for a paddle. The teacher who paddled me for borrowing a pencil had her own paddle with 1/2 inch holes drilled in it to make it hurt more.
My opinion, as long as there are sadistic teachers and principals in the school systems, there is no room for corporal punishment. In my school, it was plain and simple child abuse.
