I think you may be fooled by the vastness of the geography. Even though the Spanish speaking world of Mexico, a portion of the Caribbean, Central and South America may look vast on the map, it is English which is the most widespread language in the world today (not just native speakers, but those, like myself, who have acquired English as a working, daily language).
The map appearance is also deceiving because it includes a very large country like Brazil, where Poruguese, not Spanish, is the national language.
I agree, however, that Spanish is extremely useful in today's world. Besides English, it is the only other language I can use around here on an almost daily basis.

I want to argue. The reason Spanish is so widely spoken is because the Spanish explorers were so widely travelled and had a tendency to procreate with all the natives that they came into contact with.
English is the official language of my country and if i am in my country I should not need to learn the languages of every nation who's people come here.
If you and yours and everyone else want to speak your native tongue amongst yourselves and in your home fine, but do not expect everyone else to learn your language. America is a melting pot, but this generation of immigrants has refused to melt.
During my college summers i had a job in a factory that posted every sign, notice and memo in 10 separate languages. now tell me if a machine breaks down, or a person gets caught in a machine how much damage will be done because the co workers can not communicate.
May the Deity of your choice smile upon you, but in their name learn the language of the land before you go there, don't expect the land to adopt yours because you cant be bothered.
By the token of Spanish being #2 then why don't we all just learn Mandarin, I mean 1.5 Billion Chinese must be onto something. I say if you don't like my previous argument then we better all start learning Mandarin because hey, more people already speak it so it must be the language of the future.

There are a lot of ways to calculate that statistic, but yes by some counts, Mandarin is first and Spanish is second.
No, I don't want to learn Spanish.

Claro que si. But, in the United States, it is the language of the service industry employee, not the language of professionals.
Why would you make the divide between Americas worse than it already is by arguing and posturing on the English answers section.

Actually I have a newspaper in front of me that says it is English.
It says:
Mandarin: 1, 075,000,000
English: 514,000,000
Hindu: 496, 000, 000
Spanish: 425,000,000
Russian: 275,000,000
Although I have been to the US several times and was surprised how many people just spoke Spanish, even in small towns in Washington.
