I can't match your 17 years, but I was on and off Xanax for over 10 years. I never had any side effect or addiction issues with it. (However, I stashed a big supply of it and then OD'd, so my doctor says I absolutely cannot get more.) She has me take Neurontin (one of the anti-seizure type meds) on an as-needed basis for anxiety problems. It works well for me, but when I take it I am usually pretty tired by evening. I'm also on Lamictal, Tegretol, and Seroquel. Any time you use more than one med, the results are somewhat unpredictable, and vary from person to person. Also, the side effects vary form one person to the next. I hope you find something that works right for you.

More than that:

In the 70s the doctors were giving out Valium like M&Ms.

In the 80s the doctors were satisfied that "new" Xanax had all the good qualities of Valium - but was not as addicting.

In the 90s the doctors found that Xanax was even more addictive than Valium - and started putting people on Klonopin.

Wonder what will be next?

Have been taking one pill or another for anxiety for over 30 years.

I dont think its an allergy. I myself was on xanax 1mg 5 times a day for over 3 years. My dr. switched me to Klonipin and it worked well. not on any now thank God. xanax is a highly additicitve med as u know so dont stop at once have your dr. ween u off slowly. Good Luck

Talk it over with your doctor if he switches you you may not need to go cold turkey it is just a change in drugs. but you still need to talk to your doctor so you understand the reactions you are having because you should not be mixing the meds.

You shouldn't stop cold turkey, I heard you can get seizures from doing so.

Doens't sound like an allergy - talk to your doc.
