Because the United States stands for higher ideals than human worship of a single religion. Read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
And last I checked, freedom of religious worship was a given in the ranks. And last I checked, the United States didn't have an official religion. And last I checked, my dog tags didn't have to say "Christian" for me to wear the uniform.
If you are an American citizen and share love or country with others and wish to defend principles that will never be irrelevant regardless of how enemies foreign OR domestic wish to bring them low, then you would be PROUD to serve in the military.
And if you're really a bona fide atheist, how you invoke a "hell" you couldn't possibly believe into your question is really something to wonder at.

I'm a one hundred percent non-believer, and I fought for my country from the first day of the war ( yes, I was at Pearl Harbor )'till the last day. I wasn't fighting for a Christian country, I fought for America, my home.
This is not a Christian country. The majority of citizens are Christian, but the government is religiously neutral. However, if the majority was Shinto or Hindu, I would have fought for my country just the same.
So ,what you're telling us is that you're not a Christian, and you're not an American. Bon voyage. Good luck in your new non-Christian country.

If you don't like America. Leave. If on the other hand you like the USA for other things besides it's churchs then try fighting for them.If for no other reason for your own self important ***. Your question is not a statement of principle but a attempt to explain why you won't put yourself on the line for a country you liked just fine until some one asked that you do something difficult to justify all the benefits it has given you. If you don't think that you have gotten nothing trade places with any number of people in Sudan.

The best thing about fighting for America, is that you are fighting for your right to remain an Atheist. If you do your research about other countries, you wouldn't have such freedoms as freedom of religious beliefs, freedom of speech (to make the statement you made here) etc. My family has lost blood in all the wars the United States has been in.... all for the freedoms you are enjoying now. If you want to continue enjoying those freedoms, perhaps you should rethink your question, and understand that you should fight for them, too!

Don't fight for the goddamn christians. Fight for yourself, and other atheists. America is not a "christian country" . Unfortunately there are a lot of those gullible degenerates that live here, but there are lots more churches to choose from. The Church of Satan for example.

I,m a christian and I would not fight for this country because the bible tells everyone not to take up arms against each other.
So the fact that you are athiest is not going to ever keep you from taking up arms is it?
If you think that this is a 100% based christian country then you have not read the bible, and know very little about God.
There is speration between church and state in this country-it just gets a little muddled at times.

If America would have not seperated from England then you would be Roman Catholic, period. Think of other countries where when your beliefs differ they behead you..... my husband was in iraq, you realy need a reality check. those people want to kill you because you where raised in a different neighborhood....Plus without the military you would not have any rights... like the right to be an atheist and the rights to post your question about it up here.

<> Politically secular (NO - 'secular' does no longer mean 'atheist') Socially Christian <> no longer all Christians are Catholics, although all Catholics are Christians. only those who, for some mad reason, do no longer favor to be taken heavily, will disagree with the above sentence. <> changed into it 'prayer' or changed into it 'prayerish'? If it really is in basic terms a 'prayerish' digital mail, i could not be bothered. Why are you so bothered? <> So? using the time period "God" in this feeling is neither an endorsement of a particular faith, nor an attempt on anybody's section to evangelize you - so that you do not have any genuine legitimate beef right here. <> in case you could not take it, do not dish it out.

woa buddy. Have you been asked to go fight for christians? That'd be weird. America isn't christian, although many want it to be that way, there is still separation of church and state. Don't despair, stay strong, and hopefully we'll keep it that way. Stay informed, vote, don't give yourself a negative image by bashing religious people, that won't help your cause. Something that will get most really nutty christians, the born againers, is whenever something gets heated (like when they rally against homosexuals during gay pride) is when you tell them to forgive. They can't stand it. I've been to several gay pride parades and there's always a group of them bashing homosexuals with really mean signs telling them they're going to hell and what not. Just say: "aren't you christian?" when they say yes you say "then forgive them". Oooh they get mad.

Since when was the USA a Christian country? Is this not your country to? do you value your way of life and freedoms? If you don't support the USA go live somewhere else.
