It can take a number of different forms - mild depression can be listless, lacking energy, unable to see something positive, general feeling of being down, crying for no great reason
A more serious form of depression is one that goes on beyond a few days, thoughts of self harm including suicide play on the mind, the above smptoms but with a greater sense of being down.
The only advice is if you suspect you are entering depression particularly one involving thoughts of self harm are see a GP or (and dont be shy) even a psychiatrist - catch it early and it can be treated allowed to run it becomes hard to get a grip on
good luck

A depressed person will typically stay in their home or room most of the time, sleep a lot, not want to be around other people. They will have feelings of hopelessness, and helplessness. Depression is repressed anger. This repression could go as far back as when they were a toddler (age 2-4).

Depressed mood
Poor appetitie -- either weight loss of weight gain
sleep disorder --either too much or too little
fatigue -- out of proportion to activity
Restlessness, irritability, or withdrawal
Poor self image
difficulty in concentrating
poor memory
suicidal ideas -- sometimes as they recover they actually not only have the ideas but the energy to try it.

Someone who is depressed will often lose their appetite. Or they may binge eat, depending on their personality. They may retreat from the social environment and stay to themselves. They may go to bed and turn their face to the wall in the fetal position. They may be tearful, or they may seem to be emotionless, with a flat affect. They may talk of suicide, or just quit talking at all. They may start giving away their possessions, because they have lost interest in them...or as prelude to suicide. If you know someone showing these symptoms, please try to find professional help for them immediately.
