Get the Dyson. Pricey but worth it. I got mine from Costco a year ago for around 450. I think the newer ones are normally 500-600ish at Target and 500ish at Costco now. Totally worth it.
Plus if you buy from Costco they have a great return policy. I decided to take the plunge and hey, if I didn't like it I would return it. I was immediately hooked.
I've seen the "Animal" Dyson and I looked it over, but it seems to be pretty much the same as the Dyson at Costco which was cheaper. I think the Dysons tend to work the same (the cyclone suction), so just get the one that's the most affordable. I think the only difference is an additional attachment (not sure though). Btw, other vacuum companies have their "cyclone" versions but they don't work the same way as the Dyson.
I just want to add I too vacuumed the day before w/ my old vacuum, then used the Dyson. The Dyson picked several handfulls of animal hair my old vacuum didn't.

The Dyson, they make one especially for animal hair but they all work really well. They are a little pricey, but they last forever. The one I have now I have had for five years with no repairs or problems. It works great picking up the hair. I have two larger dogs and one is a Lab so I have tons of hair. I even use it to vacuum the dog, and it does a great job there to.

The Dyson DC14 Animal. I don't have one but plan on getting one when I move to my next place. I've heard nothing but good about it and it's priced a lot less than a Rainbow at around $600. The Rainbows sell for around $2500 and would be the best bet if you care to spend that much. They along with the Dyson will never clog up because there's no bag to deal with.
Edit: Kirby's are HORRIBLE machines!! I used to sell vacuums and Kirby homes were always the dirtiest I found.

DYSON, I just bought one on eBay and it is a charm. I had an Oreck but was starting to feel that it was not enough. After cleaning a rug with Oreck and then the Dyson I felt shocked at the result, the Dyson had picked up a cup of dirt and hair which I could not even see. I am delighted with the Dyson. Vacuum dealers on eBay give you good bargains with warranties too.

Good question. I'd like to know the answer too, I have a Hoover upright that I would rate as just OK. There has to be something better.
