Step 1 – Positioning of the chopsticks

Place the first chopstick so that the thicker part rests at the base of your thumb and the thinner part rests on the lower side of your middle fingertips.

To hold the stick firmly in place bring your thumb toward your fingers. You should leave about about two or three inches of chopstick extending past your middle fingertips.

Now you’ve got one in place, it is time to place the other chopstick correctly. Place it so that it is held against the side of your index finger by the end of your thumb. (As if you were holding a pencil)

Make sure you adjust the comfortably but more importantly the ends of the stick must line up in order to grab any food.

Step 2 - Alright they are aligned, now it is time to pivot the top chopstick

Put a little pressure on the top chopstick. It will pivot on your index finger and thumb. Its important to remember the bottom chopstick does not move. Your thumb will stay fairly still, while the index and middle fingers are used to move the top chopstick.

Here you are moving the top chopstick to the bottom one. To grasp a piece of food and lift it off the plate one must hold those tips together firmly and then place lightly into your mouth. Although one should not stoop, you can, if you want wish to lean over your plate a little during your first couple tries. To perfect the skill practice as much as you can. Go ahead and use two pencils or pens and hone the skill so you can look good next time your are in a Chinese Restaurant.

It depends on the geography. I personally cradle the end parts in the nap between the thumb, and index finger. I use the thumb too hold the sticks slightly apart from each other, (one stick resting just by the inner thumb joint, the other stick close to the inner index joint). Closer to the top of the sticks, (the one that is closest to the thumb), is steadied by my middle finger, (this stick stays stationary).
The stick by the index finger is pinched into place by the top of the thumb, (you use your thumb, and index to move the top stick around, and pinch the food). When you deal with rice that is no longer sticking in clumps for easy pick up, I create a small gap between the two, and use them as a shovel, scooping up the tid bits of food. It takes some practise. I am starting to get good at using chopsticks, (I can polish off the whole plate, with maybe 7 or 8 grains of rice are remaining when I am done... and that is on a bad day). On another note, surprisingly... you don't need to apply a lot of pressure to the food to pick it up. I hope this helps.

Balance one chopstick in the crook of your hand and the three last fingers.

Use the other chopstick like a pincer with your thumb and index finger.

Assume you're on a diet and your goal is to eat as little as possible, and you will enjoy eating with them!
