Talk to the owners first!
Then call the cops and animal control. File a complaint, there are laws that protect you. It'll take a little while though.
Try and make friends with the dogs. Hot dogs and cheese will do a lot for a dog's attitude.
Get a hose. Wet, cold dogs are usually silent in their misery.
Get a spray or electronic deterrent. They have sprays that do sting and others that don't, your choice. Electronic gadgets will make a sound that the dogs hate. You might be able to train the dogs to shut their mouths. All is available at pet stores. Except the stinging sprays, get them at a sporting goods stores or the camping section of Walmart.
Good Luck, and forget the hammer, antifreeze works much better. It's sweet, they lap it right up. Changing seasons gives plausible deniability, and it takes awhile, so you can hide the evidence.
Cheers.

You should wait until hell freezes over to go over with the hammer unless you are going to use it on the owner! The dog is obviously being ignored, or left alone too much or maybe simply even hungry or taunted by kids. Its not the dogs fault even though its annoying. Talk to the owner first (nicely! C'mon you can do it! Grit your teeth!) If that doesn't help throw a handful of dog food over the fence. That should keep him busy for a while! *L*

Good luck...just don't blame the dog!

The dogs are probably bored or else something is wrong.
Try going over and check on your neighbor. Tell the neighbor that
you were concerned because their dogs were constantly barking.
This should embarrass him/her enough to get an apology for the
barking dogs and perhaps the quiet you are seeking. If that
doesn't work then call animal control to come out and speak
with the dogs' owner.

I know you'll get a bunch of angry comments, but I couldn't agree with you more.
I had the same prob with my ex-neighbor (we ended up moving because she was NUTS). It was really bad cuz it was a duplex and she kept the dogs inside all day (like 12 hours--poor dogs, can you hold your pee for 12 hrs?!)
The landlady didn't do much to help so that really sucked.
I would talk w/ the neighbor first when they're home, just so you're the good guy and tried to solve the problem properly first.
Then call the cops and let them deal with it.
Good luck, you'll need it buddy.

We have this problem too. Our neighbors have 2 rhodesian ridgebacks and leave them out to bark. Their back yard abuts our side yard (near my daughter's window). The other night my daughter asked me if I could kill them for her (gulp!!). They keep her awake and she has had a lot of trouble sleeping lately because of them. We had a talk about hwo people love their pets, and how sad the family would be.....but I digress....

I would recommend a call to your local animal control, unless you are friendly with the neighbors. Some of the people in our neighborhood go a little postal when you try to talk about their dogs (or kids for that matter).

Our animal control has an online form you can fill out and they will pay a visit to the people (without disclosing who filed the complaint). It helped our situation for about 6 mos -- maybe it is time to report them again. I don't understand why people have dogs and then leave them out 24/7 in a subdivision with homes that are fairly close (it would be another thing if they had 5 acres!).

The other thing you can do is shout at the dogs yourself. I do this frequently -- even when my neighbors are out with them. It is like the parents in public who don't discipline their kids. Frustrating!

Good luck!

The dogs are bored, lonely and in need of attention. I would do as
Big mouth suggested, and go to your neighboors and ask if everthing is alright because thier dogs are barking so much, I would do this every-time in between calling animal control.
If you become over bearing to Police and Animal control, they can't arrest you for making a law-ful complaint.......they will soon deal with the noisy pet owners.
Dog barking dosen't bother some people, our neighboors dog bark what seemed like 24/7, as long as it wasen't my dog barking it never bothered me, but it drove my husband nuts.........now his best freind is a purple crayon.........lol just kidding!

Good luck. We've called the cops multiple times (cops drove by, knocked on the door, but the owner wasn't home. Every. Single. Time.) Banged on their door, they won't answer it. Did tell him in person one time and he just looked at me like I had 3 heads.
I'm going to buy a anti-bark device on Ebay and see how that goes.

Call the police (non-emergency number) or the animal control people. Direct confrontation will only get you in trouble. Make a pain of yourself to the people who can threaten to take his animals away if he doesn't control them. Make sure to make a recording of the sounds that are disturbing you to document the case. Dogs can be removed from the home of an owner who lets them keep barking, because that is a sign of neglect.

The answer about noise abatement is close but it only works where police can be gotten to do thier jobs.( If in the country, you'll get laughed at.)
Also try animal control if any............Neglect!
Dog noise is considered nuisance, and the best you can expect is to wind up in court.
If the dog owners own thier home and you do too, I suggest a friendly approach. If they rent get after the land lord.

If you are in the UK, barking dogs infringe your statutory right to peace and quiet. You can get the council to slap a noise abatement notice on your neighbours, and if they don't comply with the order, their dogs will be taken away from them.
