Many of these less reputable breeders claim that their Shih Tzu possess the ‘imperial’ or 'teacup' gene. There is no proof that such a gene exists. Size reduction occures by breeding the smallest dog in a litter to another small dog of another litter, and son on and so forth. This not only creates an abnormally small Shih Tzu, but also puppies that may have health problems. This is not indicative of an ‘imperial gene’ but rather of poor breeding practices.

There is actually no such thing as a teacup Shitzu, Yorkie, or Poodle. There are only puppies which are smaller than normal. These small puppies often have health problems. They are susceptible to bone disease as their bones are fragile; their internal organs are are often weak and susceptible to failure; their teeth don't fit in their mouths, so there are major dental problems; their blood sugar levels are finicky too the point that they are candidates for comas and hypoglycemic shocks; they are very prone to diarrhea and vomiting; and they often need surgeries that many die from, being unable to withstand the anesthesia treatments.

teacup refers to the size, so they take the smallest pup of the litter aka the runt and breed to try and make them smaller, so yes they are usually not as healthy as the bigger pups from the litter. The runt is often the pup who gets all the bad genes from the parents. So I would advise againt one. Plus Shih tu's are being breed to epidemice proportions right now, which means lots if inbreeding and heriditary health problem. This breed is slowly getting ruined by this obsessive breeding! If you want a small dog why not look into a Maltese of havanese? They are getting more popular but not as bad as the shih tu's! Plus there is a bad genetic trait already showing up in these dogs, sever allergies!

In order to make those inordinately small dogs or inordinately large dogs, such as a Royal Standard Poodle, they need to breed genetic irregularities together, so that means these animals haven't developed properly, it's a whole breed made from runts, which often tend to be unhealthy.
Even the Irish Wolfhound, which is, in its standard state, extremely large, has health problems if not raised properly.
If you want a small dog I would suggest one that normally tends to be smaller, like a Schnauzer.

what was your first clue? the fact that dogs are not meant to be the size of a freakin teacup? or the fact that you will pay a lot of money for a mongrel that will have health issues and not live long.

This is only my personal view on the subject, not backed by facts: I think all hybridized animals, bred to be exceptionally small have serious problems. They shake, are nervous, yap a lot and are generally unhappy animals.
The fewer of these we buy the more breeders will stop crossbreeding animals into these freakish sizes.

Why not log on to the shih tzu club of america site? They have quite clearly stated their opinion on these dogs which, to people who love the shih tzu breed, are clearly not acceptable.
