Sometimes a word may not sound like it should be offencive. Paki from Pakistani doesn't sound like it should be... it's just a shortened version. The word 'Paki' however has always been used as a derogatory term an as such for the most part is. It is also used by most people against others of general Asian nationality and often not even people who are from Pakistan.

It totally depends on the person who is using the word and their relationship with the person they are using it on.

For instance with close friends I can call them a B***h as a term of endearment but if I called a colleague at work or a stranger in a street that I would probably be slapped.

Again Paki isn't a word I would ever use as I find it an offencive word.

It's not racist. A Paki is a Pakistani, from Pakistan. A British Pakistani would still be a Paki. I'm tired of people who see racism everywhere. Maybe some Europeans have a more laid back attitude towards "racism".
When I call black people from Africa black, they don't take offense as much as black Americans. It's not racist at all. It's just words, adjectives, tells where a person might be from and look like. It's informative.

Some people are just more touchy than others.

A person from Pakistan is sometimes referred to as a paki. I'm not sure if this is a derogatory term or not though

It's a pejorative term used by people who are too ignorant to distinguish between people from different parts of the Indian sub-continent for people hailing from that part of the world who have a brown skin. I find it abhorrent and have never used it.

Paki is not offensive! If someone called me a Brit and I took offence, I'd get slapped for being stupid. However I could call a Pakistani anything and if he took offence I'd still be the one to get slapped! Kcufing stupid system we have in UK. Racism and discrimination is so one-way in this country, and it's all the wrong way.

It's an offensive term if causes offence and it usual does because it is meant to. To argue that calling someone a "Brit" is the same thing is ridiculous, particualry as most asain people like to be indentified by their religion and many asain people in the UK are also "Brits".

My understanding, limited though it may be, is that 'Paki' more or less means 'Pure'

I'm afraid that counts me out!
