Oh, cats absolutely love to roam it is just their nature. I live in the country and we have a barn cat and he comes and goes as he pleases for sure. It doesn't matter really on the roaming if she was spayed or whatever they still love it. Or i hate to say this but she could have possibly gotten hit or when cats are sick they go away to die. Was she sick at all? Then again she may be in someones house or whatever and she may still come back to you yet. It is hard to say really . How long has she been gone? I sure wouldn't give up on her yet if she has not been gone that long.
I remember years ago we had a tom cat and my dad for some reason didn't want him around so he took and dumped him like five or so miles from our farm. Well, of course i cried and cried and then like maybe a week later he was back home again i was SO happy! Anyhow, dad just said oh well if he wants to be here that bad then i will let him stay! I hope you find your cat soon.

Cats have a very independent nature, they go from house to house on their travels. and they just sometimes just find someone else who loves them just as much. You never own a cat, they own you. you may find a cat that is faithful to one owner but not very often.

A cat belongs to no-one but itself, in Enmgland they are classed as wild animals.

Unlike dogs, cats have not been completely domesticated. They still have that wild streak running through them. That, combined with the fact that they are very independent; they do as they please and feel no loyalty towards their keepers.
