Basically I have never really trained in any sport that involved striking and I am acquiring a boxing bag soon to go in with my home made gym. So I was just wondering if anyone knew how I should approach utilizing my body bag. I mean like aside from walking up to it and punching, I figure there was a method to the madness. I hope somewhere here can give me some insight on this.

I assume you are talking about the heavy bag. Before you use the heavy bag make sure you use/purchase heavy bag(striking bag) gloves and hand wraps. ALWAYS use these two pieces of equipment when working with the heavy bag. How you use the bag depends on your fitness level. Since you have never worked with the bag before the important thing to know is make sure you protect your hands. Wrap them correctly, and when making a fist always keep your the top of your hand and wrist in line. Bowing or pronating your wrists when striking the bag will result in injury. also remember to tuck your thumb underneath the first two finger of each hand when making a fist. When using the bag make sure your body is tension free and relaxed, including you fists. Your fist should not tense up until just before the strike. Remember to use good form(proper boxing stance, hands up) when throwing your punches. You can do a yahoo search and see videos on line of boxers/trainers instructing and throwing combinations on the bag. It is a grueling workout and great for relieving stress. It's my favorite piece of equipment to work on. You'll discover with your use of the bag that you'll get proficient at throwing combinations and finishing/staying on balance. You can also do a yahoo search on the proper way to wrap your hands. Have fun and enjoy, the heavy bag is a blast to workout on.

Everything Brent F said is right on point as usual, he only forgot to mention one thing. Make sure before you hit the Heavy Bag, your hands are properly wrapped and that you use good quality Bag Gloves. Grant Boxing.com and Ringside.com are your best bet. Brent F deserves the nod here for a well thought out informative answer.
Good luck Tom.

One thing to keep an eye on is your stance. It's the first thing you want to learn. Once you get the stance down the effectiveness of your punches will go up instantly.

Title Boxing makes an instructional DVD that covers the heavy bag fairly well. "How To Hit The Heavy Bag".
