A truant is a person under 18 who has a legal duty to attend school who habitually misses school or some classes without a valid excuse. Truants cannot be punished criminally but they can be ordered by a judge to attend class and then if they fail, they CAN be punished for disobeying the court order.

to be truant is to be absent without leave, particularly from school
there are laws in my country against truancy, which gives police the right to question why a child is not in school during school hours
