Cat flea shampoo is perfectly fine for dogs.
It's the other way around that's dangerous--never use anything designed for dogs on a cat.
Go ahead and give him a bath to cut down on the fleas.
If he's an inside dog as I assume, you'll have to treat your house asap. Raid flea spray works pretty well, it is fairly expensive though, but it kills adults, eggs, and larvae, which are scattered throughout your house, hiding deep in carpets or wherever the dog walks and especially where he lays. You must spray every possible surface.
Ideally, you should use a spot-on treatment (small tube of liquid applied to the skin on the back of the neck or shoulders once a month) such as Frontline or Advantage (or Advantix which also takes care of ticks). Most pet stores now carry these products. They are more expensive but they work very well. Make sure to get the appropriate size, you must know the approximate weight of your dog. Revolution is an excellent product that takes care of fleas, ticks, ear mites, and also takes care of parasites such as roundworm and heartworm, but it must be purchased through a vet since the dog must have a heartworm test first.
I personally have excellent results with a cheaper spot-on product called BioSpot. Some pet stores and many feed supply type stores carry it. It doesn't do too well if the animal already has fleas, but once you get rid of them it does a great job of preventing them. It also kills/repels ticks and mosquitos.

So go ahead and give the dog a bath with the cat flea shampoo, then treat your house as soon as you can (preferably on a nice day so you can get out of the house for several hours, then open the windows to air out the fumes). Then start using a spot-on treatment to prevent fleas from returning. It's worth it, trust me!
Good luck--fleas are a PAIN to get rid of, but it can be done.

What about a flea collar while you are out? Or go ahead and use the cat flea shampoo, it couldn't hurt.

Go buy him flea shampoo designed for dogs. The stuff designed for cats may not be as effective, and might also make your dog sick.

Good luck!

I have 2 dogs who used to have fleas and we used advantage you can have it delivered right to your door and its a lot cheaper than at the store. My dogs no longer have fleas just remember you can't hold them or touch them where you put the medicine but its worth it.

Why aren't you using advantage? It is fairly in-expensive on ebay. Fleas are more than just an itchy nuisance, fleas are a health hazard to animals and humans alike. They carry diseases also. It's not only kind but important to keep pets fleafree.
