That is an interesting question. I can think of a couple of possibilities -- note that these are only opinions.

1. It may be a matter of concealing the eyes. Some conditions that result in blindness may alter the appearance of the eyes such that the appearance may be disturbing to other people. Concealing the eyes may improve social acceptability.

2. It may be a matter of protecting the eyes. I don't know whether the autonomic blink action is affected by blindness but I could definitely see a case where a normally-sighted person would close their eyes to prevent something from brushing against them. A blind person wouldn't have this protective action.

Additionally, there could be increased sensitivity to UV and other radiation caused by the underlying condition. Darkened lenses would protect the eyes against damage.

There is this story about a blind old man who always carried a lit lantern on his way home through a lonely dark forest. People thought he was very foolish. One day, a kid asked him why? He smiled and replied. “ The lantern is not for me to see but for those who can see, so that they don’t bump into me. “

Well blind people wear dark glasses for many of the reasons given above, but mostly so that we who can see will know that he is blind.

It is because they are blind, their eyes will wonder. If they are talking to you it is a bit disturbling to talk to someone when their eyes are all over the place. When we talk to people, we are used to having someone look at us. With a blind person, sometimes they do not have the control over their eyes and they will wander or dart around.
