It is like a static electric shock.The voltage is lower than what is in a small battery.
The collars work very well for certain things and will not hurt the dog.

don't even think about going there! that is so cruel, whether or not it hurts the dog it really gets scared and if it gets shocked several times, trust me, he'll learn to hate you for putting on that collar

I use one to keep my German Shepherd from killing all my grass. I don't think that it is inhumane. We have been zapped by it to test it out and it scares you more than anything. Also, it gives out warning beeps that are clearly audible to your pet if they come to close to the boundry line. Your pet should be smart enough to only be shocked one time. That is all it took for my dog to learn!

Don't even go there. Hire a professional to train your dog for you. Better still, give your dog away now, before you do any more damage.
