i think that you should say going down or going up in respect to which direction you are traveling. If NY is to the south of where you are, you are going down to NY; if its to the north, then you are going up to NY. I CANNOT STAND when people just say going down when they're really going up!

Usually "going down" means going south, and "going up" means going north. The terms refer to the directions on a map, where up is north and down is south, as in the expressions, "up north" and "down south." Related expressions are "out west" and "back east." But, if a river is involved, then "going up or down" can mean upstream or downstream. And there are times when the "up" or "down" can refer to elevations, and can mean going uphill or downhill, or into the highlands or lowlands.

I'd of thought whichever part of the country someone came from would be why they say going down or up.

I.m from England and I live in Wales .. I would say going down to London, or going up to Glasgow... because of where they are situated ..no other reason.

Regional dialects. Different parts of the country refer to things differently. I,m from the midwest and a relative from the west coast visited recently and it was interesting all the differences in the way we referred to the same things.

Don't know. I actually say "going over". Guess if they're coming from Toronto they would be going down.
