Ask people who have the same taste in food you do. Read the menu, before commiting yourself to eating there. Follow your nose. When you're on vacation, watch the locals and see where they are going.

Your best refernce is word of mouth. In the restaurant buisness they say that one customer's bad experience is a loss of buisness on a higher level because they tell more and more people about it. Then when that place comes up, someone in a group says "I know someone thatsaid that they had the worst food and service there!" So ask around. A good way to judge is to ask the people that work in one restaurant where they like to eat. Servers love to spend their money on food and drink and they know who is going to give good service. They also know where to go that isn't going to rip you off. Talk to your local chain restaurant server and find out where their secret favorite place is. I promise they will have one. I do!

If your traveling on the road, I personally like the Mom & Pop cafes, but not always the case. Truckers usually know good places to stop at & if you see more than a few there, chances are it is worth trying

Generally I ask friends and family. I found my current favorite restaurant (Joy Yee Noodle) by talking to my physical therapist.

go there and get an appetizer only. this way if it's bad, you're not out a lot of $. also, ask around to see what people like. check your local paper for their restaurant critic...
