No, you do not need a degree, but if you want to be the director you will need a certificate. The cost is in what you want to do. In home daycare will be far less expensive. There are guidelines that you must follow as far as the way you will run your daycare. You will have to be certified in first aid and the heimlich. It is difficult to do, but if that is what you want in your life then it is worth it.

My mom runs an in home daycare. She went to college for two years and got a degree and certificates.

You will need to check with your state (Human Services or Dept. of Ed.) Rules vary enormously from state to state. CA is vigorous about fire protection, parking, play areas and a thousand other details. Most states are more laid-back. Your house will be inspected for hot water temp., refrigerator temp, etc. and your water will be tested if it comes from a well. You will definitely need a safe, enclosed play area outdoors. There will be rules about the ratio of adults to children, and special rules for infants. We are, of course, talking about LICENSED day care facilities. I know in my area a lot of people somehow avoid the licensing process....
