The plant has a rather acrid smell that is not particularly pleasant. I don't know why you want to cook it as it is deadly poisonous. Are you planning suicide or murder? Or are you an Elizabethan enthusiast and making eyedrops to make your eyes bigger and darker?

I am working on a novel and one of my characters combines herbs to make a magical healing potion. The idea is that when used alone the herbs are deadly, but when combined they possess medicinal qualities (I am writing a fantasy novel, but would at least like to be somewhat accurate in my descriptions and I do not know much about herbs) I guess I could make some up. Anyway, my Mage has to be able to safely handle them and crush them. Is it ok to touch the belladonna plant?

I think you're asking this in the wrong section. Try Cooking or Folklore and Mythology--you might get a potion-loving Witch to help you out!

I don't personally know, but it's in Solanaceae, the family w/tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers, and tobacco. They all have similar alkaloids in their aerial parts, so I would assume it smells something like a tomato or pepper plant, or maybe tobacco.

For your eyes, try Visine. For sleep, try valerian root or chamomile. Or just pop a Rozerem like I do. And don't try to slip it in anyone's goblet or anything.
