When a massive proportion of the worlds population is starving and dying of curable deseases, do catholics feel that its about time to release that wealth back to the people it stole it from?

And to clarify. The catholic church DID get its wealth by theft, demanding money with menaces, and obtaining goods by deception. Unarguable.

How do we get it back?

I dont think ol' nazi boy will give it up without a fight. Whats the answer?

If they had a pile of food, the rest of the world would tell them to give it up for the good of mankind.

Instead they have priceless stolen goods.

I totally agree with you. They are thieving bastards. None of its wealth has been gained lawfully. They have taken money and goods off the poor and hungry in order to line their own filthy pockets.
It needs to be seen as the dispicable organisation that it is, run by the mafia under the cover of a religion, which frankly is a load of nonsense. Why do you think the vatican wasn't bombed during WWII? Because it struck up a deal with Hitler. Thats how corrupt it is!
We should all raid the place, bring down ol'nazi boy, sell all the goods and give the proceeds to people who need it, not to paedophile preists and psycho nuns. Then the catholics need to be arrested and held to account for their dispicable behaviour now and in the past!

I agree with you whole-heartedly. I think that what the Catholic Church has done is detestable. With people starving in the world, the pope lives in luxury like a king. They got their money through lies, murder, and stealing. How can they possibly claim to be the true religion when everything they do is against the teachings of the Bible. Catholics need to wake up to the fact that they have been lied to. They need to rise up and launch a full scale invasion of the Vatican. With all the money they have there, they could feed all of the world's poor and still have money left over. As a former Catholic, I have woken up to reality. I would only wish that more Catholics would do the same.

Actually, the Vatican funded much of the art they possess. They have protected these bits of human culture for centuries. Ditto for literature and science (though they haven't been as forthcoming about sharing it); they have indeed been the preservers and curators.

Regretably, they also destroyed much pagan art wherever they went, and that is a huge loss. They also wiped out cultures, and don't seem to regret that much as long as they advance their faith.

That said, with all their wealth, they could indeed do far more to benefit the human condition.

They're helping the poor of the world. They;ll die and go to heaven !!!!!!

However, since the planet is desparately overpopulated, it's probably all for the good. And, the treasures have to be protected somewhere and one museum is as good as another.

They are not about to give it back. I do not know the answer, but a start would be to have a big media drive----that would not stop----judging them, telling how it is, etc.,. At least, hopefully it would cause some trouble, and really embarrass them.

The definition of obscenity is the Vatican treasure trove! It is the one religion that calls itself a government. It is actually a city governed by itself and answerable to no one.

This unique, non-commercial economy is also supported financially by contributions (known as Peter's Pence) from Catholics throughout the world, the sale of postage stamps and tourist mementos, fees for admission to museums, and the sale of publications. The incomes and living standards of lay workers are comparable to, or somewhat better than, those of counterparts who work in the city of Rome.

The Vatican City issues its own coins. It has used the euro as its currency since January 1, 1999, owing to a special agreement with the EU (council decision 1999/98/CE). Euro coins and notes were introduced in January 1, 2002. Due to its rarity, Vatican euro coins are highly sought by collectors. Until the adoption of the Euro, Vatican coinage and stamps were denominated in their own Vatican lira currency, which was on par with the Italian lira.

It also has its own bank, Istituto per le Opere di Religione (also known as the Vatican Bank, and with the acronym IOR).

* Budget: Revenues (2003) $252 million; expenditures (2003) $264 million.
* Industries: printing and production of few mosaics and staff uniforms; worldwide banking and financial activities.

"The Vatican has large investments with the Rothschilds of Britain, France and America, with the Hambros Bank, with the Credit Suisse in London and Zurich. In the United States it has large investments with the Morgan Bank, the Chase-Manhattan Bank, the First National Bank of New York, the Bankers Trust Company, and others. The Vatican has billions of shares in the most powerful international corporations such as Gulf Oil, Shell, General Motors, Bethlehem Steel, General Electric, International Business Machines, T.W.A., etc. At a conservative estimate, these amount to more than 500 million dollars in the U.S.A. alone.

"In a statement published in connection with a bond prospectus, the Boston archdiocese listed its assets at Six Hundred and Thirty-five Million ($635,891,004), which is 9.9 times its liabilities. This leaves a net worth of Five Hundred and Seventy-one million dollars ($571,704,953). It is not difficult to discover the truly astonishing wealth of the church, once we add the riches of the twenty-eight archdioceses and 122 dioceses of the U.S.A., some of which are even wealthier than that of Boston.

"Some idea of the real estate and other forms of wealth controlled by the Catholic church may be gathered by the remark of a member of the New York Catholic Conference, namely 'that his church probably ranks second only to the United States Government in total annual purchase.' Another statement, made by a nationally syndicated Catholic priest, perhaps is even more telling. 'The Catholic church,' he said, 'must be the biggest corporation in the United States. We have a branch office in every neighborhood. Our assets and real estate holdings must exceed those of Standard Oil, A.T.&T., and U.S. Steel combined. And our roster of dues-paying members must be second only to the tax rolls of the United States Government.'

"The Catholic church, once all her assets have been put together, is the most formidable stockbroker in the world. The Vatican, independently of each successive pope, has been increasingly orientated towards the U.S. The Wall Street Journal said that the Vatican's financial deals in the U.S. alone were so big that very often it sold or bought gold in lots of a million or more dollars at one time.

"The Vatican's treasure of solid gold has been estimated by the United Nations World Magazine to amount to several billion dollars. A large bulk of this is stored in gold ingots with the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank, while banks in England and Switzerland hold the rest. But this is just a small portion of the wealth of the Vatican, which in the U.S. alone, is greater than that of the five wealthiest giant corporations of the country. When to that is added all the real estate, property, stocks and shares abroad, then the staggering accumulation of the wealth of the Catholic church becomes so formidable as to defy any rational assessment.

"The Catholic church is the biggest financial power, wealth accumulator and property owner in existence. She is a greater possessor of material riches than any other single institution, corporation, bank, giant trust, government or state of the whole globe. The pope, as the visible ruler of this immense amassment of wealth, is consequently the richest individual of the twentieth century. No one can realistically assess how much he is worth in terms of billions of dollars."

And I think back about how the pope, the wealthiest man on this planet, walked up to that poor little Italian man lying in that rubble, put his hand on his head, and said, "Bless you," and then walked away and just left him there. That has got to be the height of hypocrisy. And then Sen. Kennedy, the pope's boy over in the United States makes the big pitch to the U.S. people to foot the bill to repair that devastated village, right in the pope's backyard. What a set-up!
