I've just reloaded windows on my laptop, but i've had to do it with a copied version rather than my original licensed disc as that was damaged and no longer works. So I want to know will my version of windows still be genuine and accept updates?

Thanks

If you typed in the KEY CODES and that work, then the genuine will probably work fine. But for gosh sakes, just TRY IT. We won't know until you know. There are probably about 50 updates just waiting for you to install. GET BUSY.

is the copied version a copy of your original you have or from some other original cd?

if it's a copy of your original than you are allowed to have 1 copy of each original cd, without the permission to lend it to someone. only for your use.

if its from someone else then you dont have a genuine copy

+ you can get updates of your version, but dont go to www.windows.com site, cause these site can read your product key number and would know immediately that you have a fake version. the problem. MS would have then your PC's Mac address and would then immediately know where you are etc...

+ you cannot get the latest IE 7.0 to run on your maschine because it does check it with it database at Silicon Valley ;-)

Good luck

If you used your own product key, and the CD you used was a backup copy of a genuine install CD from the same version, you should be OK. If the versions do not match, or it was a cracked copy, you'll be out of luck.

Best thing is to ring Microsoft in the UK & explain what has happened.
The number (National Rate) is 0870 60 10 100

Get a Mac. No access key required. Almost never any need to reinstall the OS either.

I don't think so, copying a windows operating system is illegal. I suggest buy a new one or get in touch with the manufature of your computer and as them to send the CD's for your computer. That is what we had to do for my sisters laptop.

As long as you use a legitimate access key, that isn't currently in use on another computer, you will be fine.

Ignore Maggie as she's obviously stressed because it's her time of the month

Also ignore anyone who says you can't use someone elses discs.

You can use whatever discs you want AS LONG AS YOU USE YOUR OWN ACCESS KEY

Not unless it is a copy of your own version.
