Safest way is for a lawyer to ring them up on your behalf. They won't mess with a lawyer because they know s/he can't be forced to give out any information. And they will hope that (assuming you are wanted) you plan to give yourself up. They will often make a deal regarding bail, etc. that they would never make with you directly.

Go down to the police station and then ask them to check for you. If they jump on ya and put on the cuffs the answer is yes there is a warrant.

Walk into any police station in Illinois and ask them.
The police are there to serve the public,I'm sure they would be very helpful in answering your question.
