You find a new idea to grasp, you cling to it, and you pull urself up looking for another one...Yet sometimes if you are trying to point out the path to someone who hasn't climbed as high yet they refuse to listen and continue to squirm, scratching around uselessly and following rocks that only lead them sideways.

Actually, it just reminds me of a guy I know who has half-baked opinions with no information behind them and refuses to listen to reason of any kind. Ugh.

I think to try to put a two or three dimensional shape into analogy with thought or belief systems is markedly tenuous, but we do seem to benefit from relating things to our life-on-surface-of-earth-as- approximately-2 metres-high-mammals sort of perspective, so fine, you can take the (probably best described as infinitely-dimensional) realm of human thought and understand it through the veil of some familiar struggle. Metaphor is truth. Because it's all we have.

The answer is yes, thoughts trigger brain activity that trigger more brain activity .. hence more thoughts.
