I have a 22 yr old cat that is in no way giving up on life. She is still eating well, getting around despite severe arthritis. Most cats eventually die of kidney failure and 17 or 18 can be considered a good long life for a cat.
Cameo intends to stay around for a while I guess and I love her very much so that's just fine with me.

I think the average is about 14 but my cats are 15 and 16. Although they both have serious medical conditions related to old age they are very active and happy cats. My friends cat was 21 when she died! Long live cats!!

Average life expectation? Food, a warm place to nap and acknowledgement that they rule the roost.
Average life expectancy? You're about right thinking 17 years or so. Depends on the breed of the cat.

It does depend on what breed of cat you have moggies tend to live longer that pure bred cats and that's just because they haven't been messed with genetically to look a certain way and don't have features which causes problems - such as the Persian cats who have difficulties with their eyes and noses because their faces are so flat. I have had three moggies in my time and the youngest one died at the age of 19 the eldest at the age of 25! My Burmese cats lasted until around 17 -19.

I have a cat named Natalie. She is 18 years old and still going strong. It's funny because I asked this same question on yahoo and I was told that cats live up to 25-30 years old sometimes. Good Luck with yours
