I'm not 100% sure of whether or not they can survive underwater, but they can certainly survive the duration of the bath by climbing on you or another surface off your dog and jumping right back on when the dog gets out of the water.
Either way, the eggs will certainly survive and your only safe bet is to use a flea shampoo.

Fleas can survive for short periods of time under water. They will try and get back on anything to get out of the water- you and your dog!
The best thing to do is wash with a flea deterant shampoo while bathing the dog and then get your dog treated with Frontline or another type of flea control from the vet. Please don't use the stuff you can get from grocery stores and Walmart type stores because this stuff is very different from Frontline and can cause bad reactions in dogs and has even historically caused death!
Also you should either flea bomb your house or make sure to do a lot of vacuuming if you have fleas as they breed in the natural debris in our carpet (shed skin cells and dirt).
Sprinkling borax on your carpets and beds and couches will kill fleas too.

Yes fleas can survive alot of things especially water. That's why you should use flea shampoo. Then you must bath your dog again in 10 days with flea shampoo. If they are all over your house then you have problems. Good Luck

Fleas are pretty resiliant little bugs. If you bathe your dog well, especially with an insecticidal shampoo, you can get a lot of them off your dog. You can increase the removal by using a fleacomb after the bath. The biggest problem is that once fleas are in your house, you can bathe all you want but you will not get rid of them entirely- they lay eggs that hatch out and will re-infest your dog. The only real long-term solution is to clean your house really well (no bug bombs; a good vaccuming will do) and treat your dog with one of the topical insecticides like Advantage or Frontline. The other thing to watch out for with fleas is tapeworms. If you see any rice-like segments in your dogs poop or around his anus, call the vet. They're pretty disgusting, but not generally very harmful.

I think you just need to be using a soap that will KILL fleas, and deodorize your dog. Hold on,...
I have two different Hartz shampoos--that kill fleas, their eggs, and lice from the fleas--it's a 2-in-1 shampoo. WAL-MART.
(I don't think fleas swim) I use a hose that attaches to my tub drain. That booger will wash those fleas right off of the dog. I have a hair screen that catches the hair, in the drain. Everything works just fine.
The key to soaping your dog's hair AND YOUR OWN, is to REALLY wet it down good. Don't let the dog shake the water off before you apply the shampoo.

Yes, all insects breathe through pores in their skins and so have a waxy waterproof coating. This gives them some protection against drowning, at least for a few minutes. That's why head lice are so difficult to deal with!
Its the soap that kills fleas and lice, it destroys their waterproof coating and they drown, the insecticide really isn't necessary. You can just use baby bath, lather well, leave it on for 4 minutes and rinse well.
Fleas only jump on your dog to feed, then they jump off to breed. They lay their eggs on your carpet, not the dog. The black specks you see on the dog are flea dirt. (faeces).

No,fleas cannot survive underwater.Apply shamppo on its neck so that fleas don't climb up and then make him stand in water for 3-4 minutes so that the fleas die due to lack of oxygen.

no they will drown- the problem is they will all run up to his head where you can't really get them all. You can try getting him wet From the head back and see if it heps- try to wet his head and face carefully to get them to run down his body then make a nice soapy ring around his neck with the flea shampoo- maybe they won't be able to find a place to hide. Flea baths definitely help but I don't think they kill all of them. Good Luck

yes I'm afraid they can, you need a shampoo that kills fleas, don't think your the only one that has a problem with fleas this year, the weather has been great for them, just use flea treatments as often as is permitted on the label.
