This works really well but requires some effort on your part. Keep your puppy in the same room you're in so you can keep an eye on him. When he starts to act restless (and you have to learn to read his signals), or if he's been playing hard or not been out for a while, take him out. You need to go out with him, tell him "go pee", and the very second he does, give him lots and lots of praise, then come back in. This is so he learns to differentiate between play time outside and potty time.

When he makes a mistake, quietly clean it up unless you catch him in the act, then tell him no firmly, take him out and praise if he finishes outside.

Dogs learn very quickly through positive reinforcement and this way you don't give him a chance to make a mistake. At 5 months, this puppy has bladder control so training will be much quicker than with a baby. By giving him lots of praise rather than correcting, you're also building a relationship of trust with your puppy which will help you in all future training.

Crate training I think is the best. Buy a kennel. Make sure he sleeps in it at night and you also put him in it when you are gone. A puppy won't poop or pee where he sleeps. 15 minutes after a nap or eating, tell him to go potty outside and take him out. But make sure he is out there until he does the deed. If it doesn't seem like he wants to go....run or play with him until he does. And then of course positive re-enforcement. Tell him he is such a good boy to go outside. A week or two of that should do the trick. Good luck

At 5-months-old, he should be ready for training. Take him outside every two hours or right after he eats or drinks, and make a BIG deal out of him going outside. "Hey, puppy!! You're a very good boy!!!" etc.

Keep him with you and keep an eye on him when he's inside. When he goes on the carpet, just say "No", in a firm, but non-threatening manner, and immediately take him outside to go. Praise him there when he goes outside.

That's it. He should get the idea within a week what's the right place to go.

He is almost old enough to be neutered. I would recommend that. When you take him out of the crate, run him outside quickly so he can go. I think he will get the idea pretty fast. I also reward my shih tzu with a biscuit when he comes in if he has done a good job! Enjoy your new friend.

I raised my dog on puppy paper. It is wonderfully convenient. It lasts for more then one pee-pee, 'cos the odor disappears. You HAVE to take them out every two hours AT LEAST, and wait till they pee, then praise them, because they WANT to please their masters.

The library has the simplest books on training, like one syllable words like--no--stop--sit--come--stay --you get it. Get to the library. I remember in the one I read, it said you have two good years to train, then they get their own 'personality'.
