NPO does mean nothin per oral but you can ask your doctor, quite often they will allow pills with a few sips, it depends on why they made you NPO, eg stomach scope NPO can not be allowed pills half an hour before the procedure but wrist surgery NPO can be allowed, good luck

I would say that NPO is important because it means "nothing by mouth". If you can't take anything by mouth, then you can't take your medicine!
