It could be anything from bodily waste to gangrene to dressings that have turned ripe from infection. I was in a hotel once that had been used by a man recovering from cancer and the stench left over just from him being there was unbearable. They had to clear out the entire wing of the floor he was on because the stench was so bad.

Check out this stuff called Approach. You can find it online. It'll cut out any odors you are getting. you may even want to suggest it to the hospital so they won't have the odor problem anymore. My hospital is one of the ones that uses it and every time I go there, I can tell because the place doesn't have that horrible cover-up smell.

And if the hospital is causing you issues by letting that odor drift, report it to them so they can do something about it. Something like that should not be happening.

Good luck

Urine, feces, wound dressings, also there are patients who never seem to bathe and the body odor seems to stink up the rooms and you cant get it out. There are a number of things this can be.

Besides what you would expect - urine and feces - a common culprit is bacterial contaminated dressings. YUCK.

Anyone that has ever worked in microbiology knows how horrible the smells are when putting those agar plated in and out of the autoclave can be.
