I just received my mini dachshund and now begins the joys of potty training. I was wondering how I can get my puppy to go to the bathroom outside. I bring him out for about 10 min and nothing happens but as soon as we get inside, he runs around for about 10 seconds and then goes bathroom in the house. How can I switch this around?

Puppies typically need to "go" after eating, playing, napping and after excitement. Crate training is the best way to go. Your dog gets a den and you get a clean carpet.

Take the dog out and if it doesn't go potty, take it inside and put it in the crate. Wait 10 minutes. Take the puppy outside and he should go. If he doesn't go, repeat. He'll learn.

The crate should be just big enough for him to turn around in and he should be able to stand comfortably. It's a sleeping place and if it's not too big, the puppy won't potty there.

Another thing you could try is a bit icky, but it's extremely effective. The next time your puppy pottys, try to get some of the urine on a napkin or paper towel. Put it in a ziplock baggie. Use this the next time you go outside..... Take the puppy out and go to the "spot" (you do have a potty spot, right?). Let the puppy sniff the paper towel (just open it so he can stick his nose in there). The dog should go. Smelling urine will trigger the dog to potty. That's the reason why it's important to have a spot. Smells trigger certain behaviors.

You might also increase your outside time by 10 minutes if weather permits OR take the dog for a walk around the block instead.

Also, keep the dog on leash while training. It's a pain, but it's effective if you're in control instead of the dog being in control.

Last thing: Never leave puppy unattended in the house. Watch him and if you think he's going to go, say "No" in your command voice and say "Lets go outside". Pick him up if you have to! Put him out and say "go potty" and wait. If you do this right when the dog's about to go on the carpet, it helps solidify all that potty training in his little doggie brain and then he should start to 'get it' and begin asking to go outside (that does not mean you're done, it just means he's starting to understand. Keep training!).

You are lucky to have such a well-behaved Dachshund. It actually goes to bathroom in the house to relieve itself.? Wonderful! I had one doggy which believed in converting the entire house into a bathroom. But I cajoled it to chane its ways. I would take him out morning and evening at specified hours for him to relive itself all it wanted. If, despite this, it committed a nuisance in the house I showed it my displeasure by not fondling it for a day and in fact not talking and scolding it by repeaedly showing it the place where he committed nuisanse. It was an intellient dog(all dogs are) and stopped the practice. In fact, if there was pressure on his bladder at other times it would get restless and we know what it wanted. We took it out, let it relieve itself and then bring it back.

Keep him in a kennel until you get him trained. Feed him in the kennel (dogs don't poop where they eat). After feeding him then take him outside and when he goes then offer a lot of praise. Then when you get back inside, re-kennel him. Use the product "Natures miracle" to clean up any messes in the house and in his kennel as dogs will "mess" where their sent is from before.

any time after a nap, playing, or eating take it outside. after it goes give it lots of praise. same as achild? then if he has accident in the house grab by scruff of neck and shake back and forth and say bad. thats what its mom does. do not do the trdditional tactics such as rub nose in it. those do not work

Most dogs eventually pick up the rhythm and prefer to go outside. Try picking up the poo and taking it and him outside. Oddly, that helps them get the point sometimes - and it's fun for the owner!

Dogs usually want to go shortly after they eat. take him out, if he doesn't go, take him in yhen instsntly back out. when he does go praise him & give him a treat. He will soon learn Hey! I get a treat if I'm good.
