Give him a book or a toy to look at. Make sure the seat is tight enough, but not too tight. I had this same problem with all five of my children. I also used the "police are coming" to scare the child, and finally resorted to yelling or disciplining them for not staying in the carseat.
You will have to pay the fine, not the child, so TAKE ACTION! LOL

If he knows how to unbuckle his car seat already then there is really nothing else you can do, accept slide it up a little bit farther on his chest so he cannot reach it as easily! Keep reminding him why he has to be in a carseat and what will happen ( in a nice way) if he unbuckles it. I understand he is young and may noty understand, but if you keep telling him & stay strong to your word it will help. If he continues to do this I would suggest putting an adult in the seat next to him when possible! Don't give up! Good Luck!

well if he has a carseat he should be buckled in anyways. Give him a drink and a snack or a few toys that are attached to the seat or maybe a coloring book. It works for my kids.

Try placing you child's favorite toy or book in the carseat with them. This keep's you child amused for short car trips and sometimes put them to sleep. Remember to strap them in first!

Duct Tape...JUST KIDDING....I have a toddler and he can escape anything. They are smarter than we all think. Maybe just buy a good carseat with lap straps, and shoulder straps that connect together. Peace

Try making a game out of it.You could tell him or her that you can buckle in and stay buckled longer than them, and if they have a certain toy or something then try putting it in the carseat with your child.

Tighten the straps. He'll get it soon or later that he HAS to ride in a carseat. He'll give up and stop fighting it.

Make it a game. "Like lets see who can stay in their seat the longest.?" And have a talk with them to help them understand why it is so important to stay seated. My son used to unbuckle himself all the time as soon as we hit our street. It became a rule in the car that if it was running the seatbelt had to be buckled.

A swat on the butt next time your toddler pushes your button and gets out of the seat. Don't parents know how to raise kids anymore? YOU'RE THE BOSS. HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO!

depends on how old he is. is he unbuckling on his own? make sure the restraining seat belts are tight enough -- you should only be able to slip a finger or two between him and the belt. if he still gets out, you'll have to use reinforcers, like no tv that day cuz he got out of his car seat.
