I am a retired man,62 years old and a non-smoker since 1975. I can't stand to be around them, because they cause my throat and chest to hurt. I help a friend in his business, but he smokes constantly. It's non-stop smoking for him. I told him how it affects me,but he doesn't believe me. Some days I am with him in his truck all day long, and I am really in pain even with the window rolled down.Other days we are in his office where it's just as bad. He really needs me to help him,but I can't stand much more. He has the right to smoke in his own place, and I feel bad about quitting. Any suggestions?

So, he does not need your help that bad. He is being selfish, and he does not care that you are offering your services. As a smoker, I always respect my non-smoking friends. When they come over, I go outside or in another room. When we go out to eat we sit in the non-smoking and when we are in my car...I may smoke one, but I ask if they mind. If not, I will smoke outside my car. This is my bad habit and I should not make someone else that I car about pay for it. He could compromise with you, he is the one that needs the help.

I used to smoke, and I wouldn't quit until I realized that I needed to do it for myself. SOME smokers are the same way - they won't quit until they realize it for themselves. This is a tough situation, and I really feel for you. Maybe to get the message through, you could start driving your own vehicle so you don't have to ride in the car with him. When he asks why you're driving, tell him. He might get the point, then.

YOU ARE THERE BY CHOICE. I feel sorry for your friend who has a problem, but you have a choice.

Cutting thru all the emotional this and that, you just need to tell him you won't be helping him any more in his business or otherwise, starting tomorrow. THEN STOP TALKING.

If he asks why, tell him. Unfortunately, cancer and emphysema cure smoking very effectively. But you don't have to be a victim too, UNLESS YOU CHOOSE TO BE.

I am with the first answer, if he wants you to stay employed he should respect your health. If you have problems when he smokes, you shouldn't be around him. When he calls to ask why, make sure you tell him!

If he needs you to help him badly enough, he would quit if you told him it was affecting your health to breathe in smoke so much.

It is just a question of health and death. You said he really needs you. Well if he does he doesn't show it by not caring about your request. You should stop helping him.
My uncle had lung surgery one year ago.
Please take my advise

he obviously does not care about his health. tell him straight you cannot help him as you do like smoking anymore and gave it up becuase of your health. you know its addictive but your lungs are weak, if he does not take notice, don,t bover with him.
