From the top --
Taking care of your body is a religious obligation.
Your body takes in fuel (food), and burns that fuel (exercise). It's a balancing act. To lose weight you need to burn more fuel than you take in -- it's that simple.
If you eat a super-sized fries, that is good for 1 hour of very hard workout (I mean KILLER workout) on a treadmill. Do you really need those fries now that you know how much you need to exercise to burn them off?
With your body issues -- we all have them, I've got metal screws and plates and pins in my leg -- I'd suggest spinning / bicycling. Spinning is basically bicycling on a stationary bike, and can be done in front of a TV or while reading a book.
I'd also work w/ a sports med doctor who doesn't think you're an invalid (aren't those "invalid" people the ones who got you into this shape?). They can design an exercise routine that pushes you until you can't go anymore, and doesn't treat you like a gimp, but won't endanger anything.
Running -- to start running, you run for a lap, then walk for a lap, then run for a lap, etc. Eventually you run for 2 laps, walk for a lap, etc. Eventually you start running for 15 min at a shot. We all start at that point. Honest.
Join the Y and take some exercise classes. Those are run by people who are hard core, but respect newbies (although you'll be whimpering when you get done).
Finally - last thing -- jPain is something you're gonna suffer either way. If you don't exercise, you'll suffer the pain you're seeing already. If you do exercise, you'll have muscle pain, but you'll have a huge smile one your face as you put on that new swim suit. Pain isn't your enemy....

One sure fire way: find out what your ideal calorie intake should be to lose weight and keep it off. Then carry a little notebook with you and a little booklet on calories and count your calories every day. At first, it will seem like a game and you will enjoy it. Then it will seem like too much trouble. But if you will stick with it, it becomes second nature and you will absolutely (and relatively painlessly ) lose weight. You daily calorie intake is a thermometer for your weight. You can decrease your intake a little or increase it. It is a floating bubble. Learn to manage it and you will have discovered the secret to weight management for life.

Walk for an hour a day. Do not eat things like potatoes, bread, nuts, pasta after 3pm. Eating less as the day goes on is better. No big dinners, just a snack of fruit and veg. A big breakfast to keep the engine going, and lots of water.

Well, I took a walking class at college and it worked really well for me, but since you have rods in your back, I would suggest walking in the swimming pool. It burns fat and it will not harm your back.
You should really seek advice from a professional considering your situation.
If you can lift weights, 3 lb dumbelss are nice to firm up your arms. The more muscle you have the more calories you burn!

start off drinking water, no soda, no fast food, ok? then walk, go for minutes, not distance. start with 6 mins, fell ok then later end of day do 6 mins tommorrow do 8, and after u master 8 go 10 dont go over 4 mins in a week, and dont jump mins in one day, ok? sounds crazy, but you wanna build up strength, so u can do more. it is ok to keep the same mins for two days but then move up, have fun add music, dont punish yourself. it should be fun. reward yourself one day a week. but make sure it is the same day each week to look foward to it, and keep cheating at bay. good luck.. gods speed. O THE POOL THING IS GREAT.

please please PLEASE don't go on one of these calorie, carb, points counting diets etc...... i don't know of anyone who has the willpower to actually do the counting let alone stick to the diet!
just start eating healthier, watch the saturated fat you eat (fat that is solid at room temerature e.g. bacon rind, the fat in cheese, beef dripping ...) don't deprive yourself of anything or it will just do your head in, you'll want it all the time!
if you fancy chocolate, have one of those little freddo bars by cadbury, tiny bars of chocolate that satisfy the craving. instead of crisps, try seasons by quaker: dont be put off by the fact they're crispbreads, its the same as eating anything made out of corn e.g salt and vinegar chipsticks, wotsits etc! they taste gorgeous (not 2 fussed on the cheese and onion ones tho, a bit bland for me!) and they only have 2.5g of fat, 0.4g of which saturates, fantastic! they do have over 100 calories, but if you're eating plenty of fruit and veg based meals throught the day this is fine.
try this site for healthy recipes (you can even filter the search results for recipes containing the most amount of calories and fat etc you want, or if you have to avoid certain foods you can use the filter to do this too, really good idea) http://www.recipezaar.com. its brilliant.
look for healthy soup recipes to take to work. they're so easy to make and last up to 3 days in the fridge so once you've made it you dont have to worry about what to have for a few days! just have a brown bread roll with it, i'm not keen but kingsmill ones are lovely. but always use stock granules, much healthier and easier, and i actually prefer using them. the knorr chicken one is brill, i havent tried the vegetable one yet though.
chicken and turkey are the leanest meats, and chicken is sooooooooo versatile theres so many recipes for it! even if its just grilling chicken with seasoning, like the schwartz shotz, little sachets of seasoning like chargrill, bbq, cajun etc makes it much more exciting and its so easy! served up with a nice big salad with a bit of fresh lemon or lime juice for more interest, or low fat dressing (you can buy the one you get with a macdonalds side salad in tesco!) and a small jacket potato or some new potatoes. mmmmmmmm!
the bbc food site has nice recipes, too. just look for simple ones that dont take too long or dont require ingredients you'll use once and throw away.
i haaaaaaate exercising but it does make a difference and you see the weight start to come off a bit sooner: grab a mate, a dog or a friends dog if you dont have one and try to have a few walks throughout the week. dont laugh at this bit, but buy a skipping rope and skip on the spot in the garden for as long as you can whenever you can, and try using a trampette when watching your favourite programmes instead of sitting there trying to fight the urge to snack!
hope this helps, if you want a few recipes or a few more tips, just let me know by answering one of my questions and i'll come back to answer more of yours! good luck :)
