3 MP is very good enough

If you always plan to compose your pictures perfectly, you don't need more than 2 or 3 MP. If you want to allow for cropping, which means enlarging only a portion of your image, the more pixels the better.

Imagine taking a scenic view and then noticing that the middle 20% of the photo would make an even better picture. Suppose you take a picture of a whole group of people and Aunt Clara really, really looks great in the picture, but everyone else looks lousy. If you have the pixels to work with, you can still make a decent print of Aunt Clara that she would be happy to have.

If you buy a 5 or 6 MP camera and don't want to TAKE large photos, you can always set the camera to a lower file size. You can never go the other direction, though. Unless the cost is a major issue, buy the 5 or 6 MP camera. You will never be sorry that you did, but you might one day be sorry that you didn't. Don't buy less than 4 MP, though. Not these days...

Virtually any camera now has at least 3 megapixels, which is more than enough for your needs.

HOWEVER...

If you start cropping and zooming your shots to create those 3X4 pics, you're gonna find out really quickly that more megapixels are desirable.

In addition, the difference between really great pics and "okay" pics, especially when you zoom and crop, is the quality of the lens. The price difference between cameras often (but not always) is due to a higher quality of lens in the expensive models. Quite frankly I'd take a 3 megapixel camera with modest features but great lenses over a 8 megapixel camera with crappy lenses.

3x4 inches??
The usual ratio would give you a 3x4.5 print, and even at a great print quality (300 dpi), that only requires 1.2 mega-pixel.

4 mega pixels would be good. 3 mega pixels is ok.
Because 4 mega pixel cameras are not expensive anymore, it is worth buying 4 meg rather than a 3 meg.

Also, make sure you set the camera's resolution to at least 1200 x 1600.

I use 4, it gives excellent quality but the pic sizes are larger
