My friend teachs Kindergarten in Va. & complains non-stop about how time-consuming and dreaded that Lesson Plans are. That's all she talks about incessantly. My question is, is her complaint valid? I am a little skeptical?

I would imagine that the actual concept/lesson to be taught isn't the difficult part of planning. It's probably the execution that takes time to plan. I subbed for a kindergarten class once and quickly realized I NEVER wanted to teach children that young. There's simply too many of them, and they're too needy. :) I teach 3rd grade. It usually takes me an hour or so on Sundays to map out the week's lessons, but I tweak the lessons throughout the week as I see fit. If I'm doing a more hands-on project, it takes more time to plan. Kindergarten is mostly hands on. I bet your friend really does have a lot of time-consuming work as a kinder teacher.

Yes. Her complaint is valid. Teaching is very time consuming, especially if it is done well. Anyone can follow a teacher's manual, but that is not teaching. Real teachers get to know their students and design lessons to meet the needs of all children. It gets easier the longer you do it, but then again every year brings a different class, and different kids with different needs. However, I see many new teachers spending time creating cutesy things that take a lot of teacher time to prepare yet produce little educational value in terms of creating independence among children. Children should be actively engaged in their learning. They should be talking and thinking not mimicking and repeating after the teacher. Classrooms should be busy places. They should be joyful, not rigid and silent.

Praise your friend. She's doing an important job.

Most weekends and evenings, especially, if you are also creating Individual Education Plans.
