its like being married and having something on the side.

its acutally quite selfish and completely one sided cause you the person that is the third wheel never is never fufilled, does not get the marriage or the chance to have kids.

and if the relationshiip fails well she has the safety net of going back to her husband. ecspecialy if he does not know the affair is happening.

I would interpret this as meaning getting the best of both worlds.

People usually use this term to mean that someone is married , thus having sex and family - the "cake" and is cheating to get more on the side - "eating it too".

To a man it means banging your wife and your mistress all in the same day. To a woman it would mean getting new shoes that aren't on sale and finding the perfect outfit to go with it at the same store.

It is an expression meaning your trying to have a certain situation you way, both ways. Like from both sides of the spectrum. which we can't always have and so we should get over ourselves.
