2 years ago I bought a new compaq laptop from a reputable shop in Spain but did not receive a cd with windows xp.At the time i was not overly concerned and assumed as everything waspreinstalled it must be normal practice.Now i want to know if I can get a cd more for piece of mind than neccessity as you never know when it may be needed any advise appreciated !!

On Compaq systems there is usually a facility to burn a recovery disc after you have set the machine up.
If you want and Xp CD you will have to by it. See the link below.

When you purchased your laptop with XP preinstalled you should have got a recovery disk with the laptop which also contains the drivers etc.
If you did not, go to the manufacturers website and request one or look for the software download
